焼尻島に咲く花　ミズヒキ

森を歩いていると、足元一面にミズヒキの花が咲きはじめました。

赤と白の小さな花が、緑の森の中でひときわ鮮やかに映えています。

米粒ほどの小さな花が、まばらに穂状につき、上から見ると赤く、下から覗くと白く見えます。

その姿が、紅白の紙ひもである「水引」に似ていることから、この名前がついたといわれています。

目立つ花ではありませんが、森をゆっくり歩いていると、足元でひっそりと咲く姿に出会えます。

そんな小さな発見も、焼尻島の森歩きの楽しみです。

Flowers of Yagishiri Island – Mizuhiki

As I walk through the forest, I find the ground covered with Mizuhiki flowers beginning to bloom.

The tiny red and white blossoms stand out beautifully against the deep green of the forest.

Each flower is no larger than a grain of rice and grows sparsely along slender spikes. Viewed from above, the flowers appear red, while from below, they appear white.

This unusual combination of red and white resembles mizuhiki, the traditional Japanese decorative cord used for gifts and special occasions. That is how the flower got its name.

It may not be a showy flower, but when you walk slowly through the forest, you will find it quietly blooming at your feet.

These little discoveries are part of the simple pleasure of exploring Yagishiri Island.
